Lily of the Valley Still Life 1961

Lily of the Valley Still Life 1961

An exquisitely painted still life depicting a bouquet of Lily of the Valley in a simple glass vase against a black backdrop. A silent and beguiling piece. From a far the detail of the flowers appears extraordinary. Up close there is a more abstract feel to each flower. Beautifully painted in oil on board by a little known artist, Werner Weber dated 1961. Reminiscent of the 17th and 18th century Dutch still life floral paintings of Rachel Ruysch. Lily of the Valley symbolised virtuosity in the flower paintings of this time when Dutch society was profoundly Protestant and life was laced with moralising proverbs.
